In response to public comment on our December 2017 Draft Recreational Use Plan, the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group released proposed modifications to the Elmer’s Island Access Project.

The Draft Supplemental Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment for the Elmer’s Island Access Project Modification (PDF, 52 pages) was prepared to propose changes to the project and assess environmental impacts from those changes.

We’re requesting public comment starting May 21, 2018, through June 20, 2018, and will be holding a public meeting in New Orleans on May 22.

Project Modifications

While most public comments were favorable toward the Draft Recreational Use Plan, concerns were raised regarding the elevated lagoon boardwalk component of the Elmer’s Island Access Project. As proposed, the boardwalk would have originated near Elmer’s Island Road and crossed the lagoon, providing access to Caminada Beach.

In response to input from the public we considered alternatives to modify the project scope and design, described in the Elmer’s Island Project Modification. The preferred alternative (PDF, 3 pages) would eliminate the proposed boardwalk and associated small boat launch and parking area, and provide a beach shuttle service.

Public Comment Opportunities

We’re encouraging the public to provide comment on the Elmer’s Island Project Modification beginning May 21 until June 20, 2018; and attend our public meeting on May 22.
