Construction on Alabama’s Bayfront Park in Mobile County is now complete and the new facilities are open to the public. On March 9, community members gathered for a re-opening celebration and enjoyed the amenities approved in the Alabama Trustees’ third Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment.

Bayfront Park has been a Mobile County Commission park for 100 years, but now includes:

  • An approximately 900-foot-long pocket beach (protected sandy beach), the largest on Mobile Bay
  • A nautical-themed playground
  • Parking areas
  • Pavilions
  • Walking paths
  • Restroom and park office building
  • Generally enhanced park infrastructure

At the celebration, Alabama Trustee and Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Chris Blankenship, spoke about the intricate collaboration of many entities that make projects like this come to fruition. “Look at this beautiful new park, add it to the other projects in the southern part of Mobile County, and know they’re transforming this entire part of the state, the area that felt the most harm from the 2010 oil spill,” he said.

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk for visitors to enjoy swimming, outdoor recreation, or even launch their own kayaks or canoes from the beach. Additional details on the $9.5 million Bayfront Park project can be found on the Trustees’ website.
