The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group is initiating drafting of its fifth restoration plan to address, in part, natural resource injuries to Water Quality (Nutrient Reduction) and Birds caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

We began this restoration planning effort in May 2024, by requesting project ideas from the public for the following Restoration Types in the Mississippi Restoration Area:

  • Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats
  • Nutrient Reduction
  • Oysters
  • Sea Turtles
  • Marine Mammals
  • Birds

We greatly appreciate your input and have reviewed those project ideas that were submitted or updated in response to the request for project ideas. Based on the Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group’s screening process of those project ideas, two restoration types—Water Quality (Nutrient Reduction) and Birds—will be the focus of this restoration plan. We will develop a Draft Restoration Plan 5 and make it available for public review and comment in early 2026. After the comment period ends for Draft Restoration Plan 5, the Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group will then review, consider, and incorporate public comments before completing the final restoration plan.
